It’s Not About Turning Sharper

I remember watching a video years ago of a journalist driving a rear-steer buggy for the first time.

He was amazed by how sharply it could turn.

Which makes sense — it has rear steering.

But at Ragged Edge, we teach customers how to “turn sharper” within the first few minutes.

And our sessions still run for two hours.

So clearly, that’s not the interesting part.

The real capability of rear steering is far more sophisticated than most people realise.

Imagine driving directly up a steep hill.

Now imagine approaching that same hill while crab-walking sideways with all four wheels turned at 45 degrees.

You’ve effectively halved the gradient.

That changes everything.

Suddenly, rear steering stops being a turning tool and becomes a vehicle-balance tool.

You can:

increase or reduce traction
stabilise the vehicle
destabilise it deliberately
alter weight transfer
change climbing behaviour
reshape the way the chassis interacts with terrain

In other words, you’re no longer just steering.

You’re manipulating the physics of the vehicle.

That’s the part most people have never been exposed to properly.

And once you understand it, an entirely new world of vehicle control opens up.

New lines.
New challenges.
New techniques.
New problems to solve.

That’s really the core of Ragged Edge.

Not just difficult terrain — but driving options people simply won’t experience anywhere else.

… and rear steering is just one of the ‘tools’ the buggies have at their disposal.
